Red Reishi: What the Research Says

Red Reishi: What the Research Says

Ganoderma lucidum — the “Mushroom of Immortality”

Revered for over 2,000 years in Asia as a calming adaptogen for sleep, stress, and immunity, Reishi is one of the most-studied medicinal mushrooms. Here's an honest look at the research — including the studies that came back inconclusive — each labeled and linked so you can judge for yourself.

Red Reishi mushroom

The glossy, red-lacquered Red Reishi was once so rare it was reserved for royalty. We grow ours in Hawaii and harvest the potent spores to include in every bottle — 100% fruiting bodies, no fillers.

Fatigue & Sense of Well-Being

Studied in People
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 132 people with neurasthenia (persistent fatigue and weakness), 8 weeks of a Reishi polysaccharide extract significantly reduced the sense of fatigue and improved well-being compared to placebo, and was well tolerated. Human study

Immune Function

Studied in People
In advanced-stage cancer patients, 12 weeks of a Reishi polysaccharide extract increased natural-killer-cell activity and shifted immune-signaling molecules (cytokines) — an objective sign of immune modulation. Human study
Gao et al., Immunological Investigations, 2003 · Read the study
A follow-up trial in advanced lung cancer patients found Reishi modulated immune markers in some patients, with notable individual variability. Human study

Sleep & Relaxation

Animal Research
In laboratory sleep-promotion testing, Reishi fruiting body improved sleep measures in mice — consistent with its centuries-old traditional use for rest and relaxation. Animal study

Immune Support in Cancer Care

Research Review (human trials)

We're careful here. Reishi is not a cancer treatment. But a high-quality review of human trials found something worth sharing honestly:

A Cochrane systematic review of randomized trials concluded Reishi should not be used as a first-line cancer treatment — but found that when given alongside chemo- or radiotherapy, patients were more likely to respond, showed increased immune markers, and reported improved quality of life. It was generally well tolerated. Human review

Studied as a complementary support alongside conventional care — never a replacement for it.

Liver Support

Research Review
A review of Reishi's liver-supporting research describes mechanisms including antioxidant activity, modulation of liver enzymes, and protection against various forms of liver stress — while noting the bioactive compounds are still being studied. Review

Prostate Health (Early Research)

Early Lab Research
In the lab, triterpenoid compounds from Reishi inhibited 5-alpha-reductase — an enzyme involved in the development of benign (non-cancerous) prostate enlargement. Lab study

An early test-tube mechanism — not yet shown in people.

Blood Pressure (Early Research)

Early Lab Research
In the lab, proteins from Reishi mycelium inhibited ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme), one of the body's key blood-pressure-regulating systems — the same target as some blood-pressure medications. Lab study

Blood Sugar & Heart (Animal)

Animal Research
In diabetic rats, Reishi spores reduced blood glucose and triglycerides and protected heart tissue from diabetes-related damage, lowering oxidative stress and inflammation. Animal study

Heart & Metabolic Health — the Honest One

Research Review (human trials)

Honesty means showing the studies that came back negative, too:

A Cochrane review of randomized trials found that current evidence does not support using Reishi to improve cardiovascular risk factors (blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol) in people with type-2 diabetes — a reminder that animal and lab findings don't always carry over to people. Human review
